My Remote Control Tried to Kill Me

This morning my remote control attempted to kill me. I woke up and I heard this faint crackling sound, like there was an insect in the room or something. I looked around and didn't see anything, so I figured, "Well, I guess I am up for the day, let me turn on my television."

My remote is usually lying next to me in the bed, as it was this morning. So I reached for the remote, aimed it at the television, hit power - and nothing happened. I flipped the remote over and saw that there was only one battery in the remote. I found the second battery and as I was about to put it in, my finger touched the battery that was already in the remote. It was burning up!

I tried to remove the battery from the remote, but it was so hot that the plastic covering was melted and I couldn't get a firm grasp on it. So I ran to the bathroom sink and whacked the remote against it, causing the battery to propel out of my remote and into the sink, which I thought would be the safest, most flame-retardant place for it to be.

This is not my typical exaggeration - it was REALLY hot. So hot, in fact, that it melted the remote. If I had not discovered it when I did, chances are it would have either caught the bedsheets on fire or exploded and covered me with acid.

The batteries were CVS Alkaline AA batteries, by the way.
