GALVESTON — Despite Hurricane Ike, which flooded Ball High School’s auditorium and displaced students and teachers, Galveston public school district students are preparing for the annual all-district musical, which opens tonight.
More than 75 students from kindergarten through 12th grade will perform in “Grease.” The show begins at 8 p.m. today at Ball High School’s auditorium, 4115 Ave. O. Additional shows are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $5 at the door.
The musical is sponsored by the district’s fine arts department.
The auditorium’s carpeting had to be replaced and the students had to borrow costumes and props from another district, said Stephen Duncan, the district’s fine arts director.
“The students have put in long hours in a short period to be able to have the production on stage this week,” Duncan said. “All across the district, the fine arts teachers have been working to bring the students a sense of creativity, of actually making something in the aftermath of such a destructive storm. “Grease” is certainly one of those things. They have come together to create a show which is a great deal of fun.”

My Remote Control Tried to Kill Me
This morning my remote control attempted to kill me. I woke up and I heard this faint crackling sound, like there was an insect in the room or something. I looked around and didn't see anything, so I figured, "Well, I guess I am up for the day, let me turn on my television."
My remote is usually lying next to me in the bed, as it was this morning. So I reached for the remote, aimed it at the television, hit power - and nothing happened. I flipped the remote over and saw that there was only one battery in the remote. I found the second battery and as I was about to put it in, my finger touched the battery that was already in the remote. It was burning up!
I tried to remove the battery from the remote, but it was so hot that the plastic covering was melted and I couldn't get a firm grasp on it. So I ran to the bathroom sink and whacked the remote against it, causing the battery to propel out of my remote and into the sink, which I thought would be the safest, most flame-retardant place for it to be.
This is not my typical exaggeration - it was REALLY hot. So hot, in fact, that it melted the remote. If I had not discovered it when I did, chances are it would have either caught the bedsheets on fire or exploded and covered me with acid.
The batteries were CVS Alkaline AA batteries, by the way.
